JoAnna Garcia Swisher can’t wait for fans to see what “Sweet Magnolias” season three has in store. “I’m ready for it to come out. I know everyone else feels that same way,” she tells POPSUGAR, “and I actually know what happens, so I’m ready for everyone to enjoy it. It’s just a great season.”

Swisher plays Maddie Townsend on the show, which follows three best friends — Maddie, Helen Decatur (Heather Headley), and Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott) — as they navigate relationships, teenage kids, and all of life’s ups and downs. Swisher says season three, which premieres on July 20, will focus even more closely on the characters’ friendships. “I think that the dust is settling in Serenity, but there’s still all of these incredible relationships and all this love,” she says, adding that the season will look “a little bit deeper into our friendships and the Magnolias’ friendships.”

For Maddie, season three will be about adjusting to a brand-new reality. “I think for my character, she’s starting to see the light after the divorce, and that journey is a little bit uncomfortable, but I think by the end of the season, you start to see that the future is bright for Maddie,” Swisher shares.

JoAnna Garcia Swisher knows motherhood is a balancing act. “I struggle with it just as much as every mom does. I mean, we’re pulled in so many different directions,” she tells POPSUGAR. Still, she wants all moms to know that they should give themselves credit where credit is due.

“We’re multitasking to the supreme, so I think it’s so important to really just give yourself a little grace and to know that we can’t do everything every day,” she says. “As hard as it may seem when you’re in the heat of the moment, even stepping away for just a few minutes is so important.”

Swisher certainly has a lot going on. She serves as the host of Netflix’s “The Ultimatum: Queer Love,” a spinoff of “The Ultimatum” that focuses on queer couples exclusively, and stars in “Sweet Magnolias,” which is set to release its third season in July. Swisher also has two children: Emerson, born in 2013, and Sailor, who arrived in 2016. She shares them with husband Nick Swisher, whom she married in December 2010.

When it comes to spending time with her kids, Swisher says she loves to teach them how to maneuver their way around the kitchen. “We do a lot of cooking, we play board games, but a lot of our time is spent in the kitchen,” she says. “I love to cook with the girls, and I find that they’re a little bit more adventurous with their eating when they cook it themselves. They see it all; there’s no sneaky anything.”

Swisher partnered with Mrs. T’s Pierogis earlier this year, and she shares the special pierogi recipe she uses to add some extra flair to her kids’ dinners. “Normally, we just air fry them and enjoy them on their own,” Swisher says, but she loves to use “a mix of mozzarella cheese and fresh basil and fresh tomato” along with a bit of pesto to top it off. “It’s so good, so fresh, and the kids love it,” she says.

In addition to teaching them to cook, Swisher also wants to make sure she teaches her girls to never compromise their identities for someone else. “I think what I’ve really tried to do with my girls is just to allow them and to give them space,” she says. “I don’t label them as the athletic one or the funny one or any of that. It’s just really about giving them space to become who they are and to wear all the hats that they want, because now is the time to really explore who you are as you’re growing and taking it all in.”

That ethos aligns well with Swisher’s approach to hosting “The Ultimatum: Queer Love,” a show she calls “so special and important.” “Obviously, there are so many special nuances and complexities to queer relationships,” she says, “which I think are really important to highlight and celebrate and shine light on.”

In addition to wanting to encourage her kids to be themselves no matter what, Swisher wants to show her daughters the importance of taking time to rest and recharge. “It’s always a balancing act,” she says. “It’s so nice to be reminded and inspired to take time for yourself.” She’s also well aware of how quickly her girls’ childhoods are speeding by, and she says she tries to stay “present” with her children when she’s with them. “It does go by fast, but every stage is so beautiful,” Swisher says. “I used to get caught up in missing the baby stage or missing that or missing this and being emotional. I think that will never go away, but knowing that there’s so much to look forward to and watching them grow is one of the greatest joys of my life, so I’m really trying to be present while watching them unfold and blossom.”

May 26, 2023 Interviews

JoAnna Garcia Swisher is taking on a whole new kind of role. You may have seen her as Cheyenne Hart Montgomery in “Reba,” or more recently as Maddie Townsend in Netflix’s “Sweet Magnolias,” but her latest gig on Netflix’s “The Ultimatum: Queer Love” marks her first time as a host.

“The job itself, as a host, was a new one for me, but it was so exciting, and I was so proud to be a part of a show that celebrates queer relationships,” she tells POPSUGAR. “It really opens up the door to look a little bit deeper into the dynamics of queer relationships, as well as the challenges.”

“The Ultimatum: Queer Love” follows the structure of its parent show, “The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On,” focusing on five couples as they navigate a trial period of married life with their partner — and then with someone else. From there, they decide once and for all if they want to actually tie the knot.

For Swisher, despite all the inevitable drama, the most rewarding part of the experience was the love she was able to witness between the contestants. “At the heart of it, there’s just so much love between the people that participated in the show, and it was just really amazing to see how vulnerable they were, and how willing they were to go there and experience the task at hand,” she says. “. . . It was just really amazing to see them go through this process.”

Still, she notes, her hosting duties meant that she didn’t get to spend quite as much time getting to know the cast that she would have liked. “I wanted to spend more time with all the people that were a part of the show. I feel like I got to know them so intimately just watching their stories unfold, but I didn’t get to gab it up with them as much as I wanted to,” she says, noting that fortunately, “at the end I got to spend a little bit more time with them.” Ultimately, though, she saw her hosting role as a supportive position. “I was just there to help drive the experiment along and the process along, and it was really just amazing to see how it all ended up,” she said.

Swisher herself doesn’t identify as queer, a fact that one contestant confirms in the very first frames of the show. Still, she told Elite Daily that her sexuality “didn’t really come up” during the filming process. She’s also careful to acknowledge that there are differences between straight and queer relationships. “Obviously, there are so many special nuances and complexities to queer relationships, which I think are really important to highlight and celebrate and shine light on,” Swisher told the outlet on May 24. “It’s a huge reason why this show is so special and so important.”

“The Ultimatum: Queer Love” comes amidst a challenging time for the LGBTQ+ community, with anti-trans and anti-drag laws ramping up across the country. It feels like the right time for a show that celebrates queerness, queer love, and queer community, and Swisher just seems grateful to be along for the ride. “I think it’s such an important show and I’m so excited for people to see it,” Swisher says. “It’s so fantastic.”

JoAnna Garcia Swisher is ready for fans to see all of the highs and lows that will come on this season of The Ultimatum: Queer Love.

As Netflix drops the newest season of the reality show — which is a continuation of its hit series The Ultimatum — Garcia Swisher, 43, opens up to PEOPLE about what it was like stepping into the hosting role.

“It was really one of those experiences that I was profoundly changed by,” she says. “I didn’t know what to expect when they asked me to do the show. I was just so excited that Netflix was doing a show that was going to celebrate queer love. I was like, ‘Yes, I’m there. I’m in.'”

However, not long after the excitement, the pressure set in for the actress. “I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve never done this before. How do I do this? How do I be there for them? How do I do all of it?'” she recalls.

Luckily, the cast and crew were quick to relieve her anxieties. “They just literally said, ‘Stop worrying’ — which is almost an impossibility for me. But I just was along for the journey,” says Garcia Swisher. “And [I’m] so humbled by the experience.”

Besides the support from the cast, Garcia Swisher says she turned to The Ultimatum season 1 hosts Nick and Vanessa Lachey for advice.

“Of course I did [reach out to them],” she says. “Every season is different, I think. And so it’s like, you can’t really predict everything. But I went into this with an open heart, I tried to be the host that I felt was most true to me, and that’s sort of the advice that Vanessa [gave]: Just be you. And I thought, ‘OK, here you go.'”

Like the first season, The Ultimatum: Queer Love will follow five couples as they embark on a social experiment to test their relationships by seeing how a trial marriage would work with one another — as well as another partner. While one partner feels ready for marriage, the other doesn’t, so this ultimatum will help the couples decide if they want to say “I do” or call it quits.

This season’s couples consist of: Lexi, 25, who issued an ultimatum to Rae, 27; Mildred, 33, who issued an ultimatum to Tiff, 32; Yoly, 34, who issued an ultimatum to Mal, 36; Sam, 31, who issued an ultimatum to Aussie, 42, and Xander, 30, who issued an ultimatum to Vanessa, 30.

Garcia Swisher got a front row seat to the drama as she watched the five pairs develop new connections with the other couples and choose a partner for the trial marriages. (The trial marriage partnerships currently consist of: Lexi and Mal, Mildred and Aussie, Xander and Yoly, Vanessa and Rae, and Tiff and Sam.)

While helping the cast navigate their new “marriages” and ongoing love troubles, she says she leaned into her own marriage to former MLB player Nick Swisher for inspiration.

“It’s so interesting. My husband, I feel like he would do this job so beautifully too. He has so much respect for people in general and is such a great judge of character,” she shares. “Someone asked me [for] my five dating tips and the first one I gave was, ‘You’re the prize.’ Because my husband literally exists in this world believing that with every ounce of his being, no matter who you are, what you are, my husband always says, ‘You are the prize.'”

“And if you can really embody that notion, you can navigate things a lot easier or just have a lot more faith in the process,” she continues. “And so it left me feeling like there were so many times where I was sitting in that chair with these people and I thought, ‘I wonder what Nick would say in this moment.’ Because I have so much respect for him in that way. And I think he would add a lot of value.”

She adds, “And so our relationship and how he’s shown up for me really was able to shine through in the way that I was able to show up for them.”
