ABC’s “Astronaut Wives Club” has found its first member.
Joanna Garcia Swisher has been cast on the upcoming summer series from “Gossip Girl” producers Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz.
She’ll play Betty Grissom in the series about the women who stood beside some of the biggest heroes in American history during the height of the space race.
ABC desribes Betty as follows:
A bouncy redhead with curls askew and a folksy Hoosier accent, she is the wife of Gus Grissom, another of the original astronauts. She’s got a down home appeal, which endears her to the public. She also seems to have something of a clairvoyant gift when it comes to her dreams which often prove all too accurate. Terrified that her husband will die, Betty is growing increasingly nervous. She had worked hard to put Gus through college, and raised their son solo while he was off at war. She’s beginning to feel like they’re no longer a team.
The role reunites her with the “Gossip Girl” producers. She previously played Bree Buckley on The CW series’ third season.
Currently, Swisher plays the little mermaid, Ariel, on ABC’s “Once Upon a Time.” Her other major TV roles include NBC’s short-lived comedy “Animal Practice” and “Freaks and Geeks”; USA Network’s “Royal Pains”; ABC’s romantic comedy series “Better With You” and “Reba” and The CW’s “Privileged.”
ABC ordered 10 episodes of the drama series, which teams Savage and Schwarz on their first show together since “Gossip Girl.” Len Goldstein will also executive produce with Savage and Schwartz for Fake Empire (“Hart of Dixie,” “Carrie Diaries”). Michael London (“Betas,” “The Illusionist”) will executive produce for Groundswell.
Janice Williams originally brought the project in to Groundswell.
Joanna Garcia Swisher is traveling from Neverland to The City That Never Sleeps, with a plum role on Fox’s The Mindy Project.
TVLine has learned exclusively that the actress will guest-star on the sophomore comedy asthe sister of new series regular Adam Pally’s Dr. Peter Prentice. Sources say that the visit could potentially spill over into a second episode.
Swisher — whose previous TV credits include Reba, Privileged and Gossip Girl – most recently guested on two episodes of Once Upon a Time, with a third appearance as the mermaid Ariel still to come.
The Mindy Project airs Tuesdays at 9:30/8:30c.
Once Upon a Time goes under the sea on its November 3rd episode with the introduction of Ariel (aka the Little Mermaid), her strapping beau Prince Eric and Ursula the wicked sea witch.
The story finds Ariel (JoAnna Garcia Swisher, who will appear in a handful of episodes) rescuing one of the ABC fantasy’s regular characters before experiencing her own adventure, which incorporates elements from the 1989 animated Disney classic. “Once we realized we were going to Neverland, it felt like the perfect place to see Ariel,” says executive producer Edward Kitsis. Fans should look for winks at some of the movie’s iconic moments, such as a gag with a fork that nods to the clumsy dinner scene, says executive producer Adam Horowitz.
As for speculation that Lana Parrilla’s Evil Queen will transform into Ariel’s eight-legged nemesis, Kitsis hints, “In a world where our crocodile turns out to be Rumplestiltskin, you never know what might happen.” Holy mackerel!
Over at Mega Buzz, they have more information about Ariel on “Once Upon A Time”!
So excited about JoAnna Garcia as Ariel on Once Upon a Time. Do you have any scoop? — Nina
NATALIE: As the producers previously teased, Ariel has ties to a character we already know. “She’s somebody who wants to see the world,” executive producer Edward Kitsis says. “That spirit will run in her DNA still, but we’ll meet her in a surprising way.” We hear that will take place in Neverland, where other mermaids may not be so nice. But the good news is that we’ll also likely meet Prince Eric!
In the new edition of Ask Ausiello, there is some new information about when we will see JoAnna Garcia Swisher appear as Ariel on “Once Upon A Time”.
Question: Any spoilers on Once Upon a Time? —Patti
Ausiello: Matt Mitovich just got off the horn with series creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis, and they caught us up on some of the backstory gaps that will be filled in via flashbacks during Season 3. Episode 2 is Snow/Charming-centric, covering the time between the former’s awakening from the sleep curse and when they encountered Regina on the battlefield. “How did the queen react to that? And who first told her?” Horowitz wonders. Episode 3 will relate Tinkerbell’s origin, featuring The Blue Fairy (but not Amy Acker’s Nova) and addressing the question: “What makes a fairy?” Also on tap for fall is a new chunk of Rumple’s past, the tale of how Hook became a pirate and the self-explanatory Episode 6, titled “Ariel” (and yes, Eric is being cast/will not be an existing character).
Things just got a lot better under the sea, with the casting of JoAnna Garcia Swisher as Once Upon a Time‘s Ariel.
An ABC rep confirms for TVLine that the Reba/Privileged alum will play the mermaid with moxie in at least two episodes, starting with the sixth installment of Season 3.
Although Ariel’s appearance on the show — and often with Swisher’s name loosely attached — has been rumored since Season 1, the character’s Season 3 debut was confirmed at last month’s Comic-Con, in a teaser reel that showed a mysterious being sneaking up on a dwarf, stealing the fork (!) out of his lunchbox and vanishing into the ocean. Then, with the flick of a glistening fin, the redhead revealed herself and swam away.
Yet despite that context of the teaser (a la the previous Comic-Con’s glimpse of Captain Hook), Ariel will not surface in Storybrooke but in another realm.
